String Length Calculator

Client-Side New

Analyze any text with our free String Length Calculator. Get instant counts for characters (with and without spaces), words, lines, sentences, and UTF-8 byte size. Essential for developers checking string lengths for database field limits, API payload sizes, and form validation constraints. Writers use it to verify character counts for tweets, meta descriptions, and SMS messages. The byte size calculation uses the browser Blob API for accurate UTF-8 encoding measurement. Runs entirely client-side — your text never leaves your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is byte size calculated?

Byte size is calculated using the browser Blob API (new Blob([text]).size), which gives the accurate UTF-8 encoded byte count. ASCII characters use 1 byte, while Unicode characters may use 2-4 bytes.

Does it count characters with or without spaces?

Both — the calculator displays character count with spaces and without spaces separately, so you can use whichever metric your requirement specifies.

Can I use this for database field validation?

Yes — the tool shows both character count and byte size, which correspond to VARCHAR and VARBINARY limits in most databases. Use byte size for fields that store UTF-8 encoded text.

Why is byte size different from character count?

UTF-8 uses variable-length encoding: ASCII characters (a-z, 0-9) use 1 byte, accented characters (e, u) use 2 bytes, CJK characters (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) use 3 bytes, and emojis use 4 bytes. A 10-character string with emojis can be 40 bytes, which matters for API payload limits and database storage.
